Help Kelley Williams-Bolar, Mother Jailed For Sending Children to “Wrong” School

Kelley Williams-Bolar, a black woman wearing her hair pulled up and a black suit with a blue shirt, stands in court and closes her eyes as the verdict in her case is read. A lawyer and bailiff can both be seen in the background.Yesterday, I wrote about the horrific case of Kelley Williams-Bolar (pictured left), a woman who has been jailed for ten days and slapped with a felony record — which will prevent her from obtaining her teacher’s license — for sending her children to a school district other than the one they lived in.

My analysis of this unconscionable set of events can be found in the previous post. Today, I just want to draw your attention to a way that you can help Williams-Bolar appeal her case. Via Change.org, Williams-Bolar is working with the National Action Network, and is in need of funds to help her pay the legal fees she will incur in appealing the judge’s verdict.

You can send donations to the National Action Network Akron Chapter, c/o Kelley Williams-Bolar, P.O. Box 4152, Akron, Ohio, 44321. Checks can be made payable to Williams-Bolar.

Please give if you can and help spread this information far and wide.

I’ve done the same thing. The school found out, but they didn’t care because she’s in the top of her class. (And white, and beautiful, and nice.)

    * Also @Red Moody: If Williams-Bolar’s daughters were in the top of their class(es), the school system still does not care. So that doesn’t matter either, when you’re talking about racism.

Back in the days before the computer, emails and online petitions, people marched and held rallies for their rights. Is it possible to set up a march for Ms. Williams-Bolar? I live in Brooklyn, but would be happy to help in any way possible.

This a peculiarly evil case of Ohio officials protecting school segregation, which is a violation of both U.S. and Ohio law. The U.S. attorney’s office should be filing charges against both prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh and Judge Patricia Cosgrove.

@Red Moody and others: There’s always two ways to take a statement and I understood that you were using irony and sarcasm to put your point across. To those who couldn’t wait to take offense, maybe re-read that comment with a different perspective going in.

Guys cool down I detected sarcasm from Red Moody, I beleive Red Moody is agreeing with the racial issues many have pointed out in this case and cases similar to it.

this can happen to folks, w/o regard to race as well…..

if school officials and/or out of control cops simply have an agenda, to go after u for no good reason, …

i have been arrested for simply trying, to deliver prescribed meds to my first grader, at his elementary school, with written in school dosing orders from a er room doctor, with prior notice given to the school officials and an invitation to do the administration of the meds….by the school nurse..

the offense? the principal said i had “trespassed” onto the property, after being there for five mintues and waiting for my son…he called the local boardman police and they arrested me…as i was walking out of the schools doors….

spent 18 months clearing this charge, six pre trials and another bizarre twist happening in the legal world at the end..

i have had a rep for not being nice to police; but…no threats, no violence, and was an active volunteer member of my son’s PTA by then…

its an agenda that the police and prosecutor’s follow….not ONLY a racial issue….but i understand there is a major poverty racial component to what is happening to these moms….

but bad police and bad school administrators, are looking to control their authority and their turt…are equally at the root of such issues

Cocco–Or they could be sent to Old Trail, the private K-8 school where Lebron sends his kids even though he lives in Florida. If you have money, the education in northeast Ohio is great. Without it, it’s terrible. (And colleges know this, and they’re not going to treat even a 4.0 GPA from one of the Akron public high schools the same they’d treat such a GPA from St. V or Copley).
